The public school system of Newport News is a vibrant, dynamic, world-class, and technologically advanced school system that gives all students the opportunity to achieve their highest potential. Schools are demanding and built on a foundation of high expectations for students.  The learning environment is safe, orderly, and nurturing.

Newport News' public schools provide a wide range of specialized academic programs.  Magnet schools emphasize the humanities, technology, science, aviation, and the arts.  The school district’s outstanding high school International Baccalaureate program has expanded to elementary and middle schools.  Their graduates study abroad and are fluent in at least two languages.   Advanced Placement courses offer students access to challenging curricula and opportunities for college credit.  Diversity in Newport News schools is achieved by vigorous enforcement of fair housing laws and magnet schools offering unique and interesting programs located throughout the community.  Students choose schools based on curriculum and not location.  Neighborhood schools exist but are not necessarily schools of choice. Gaps in academic achievement have been closed.  English as a Second Language (ESL) students master the English language.

An elected School Board of seven governs Newport News Public Schools, and strong partnerships with local businesses and community organizations contribute to the success of the school division.  The district enjoys the support of the dedicated business and community leaders who serve on the Newport News Educational Foundation.

The public school system's commitment to help all children embrace learning, as a joyful, lifelong activity, is evident in the type of citizens it produces.
